With alcohol-related incidents on the rise nationally among college students, Lowcountry colleges have teamed up to address the issue of underage drinking and to promote alcohol-free and drug-free student activities. The College Community Coalition (CCC) includes Charleston Southern, The Citadel, the College of Charleston and Trident Technical College as well as representatives from Charleston Center and the Charleston City Police Department.
Once a month the coalition meets to discuss ways to reduce student substance abuse. Initiatives have included sponsoring alcohol-free alternatives for students and encouraging local businesses sign a Cooperating Tavern Agreement which sets guidelines to reduce alcohol abuse and the problems associated with it.
